Grandpa's Bed Becomes a Bench
Back in the summer of 2011, a customer of mine had seen some of the benches I made from headboards. She asked me if I could transform the bed of her grandfather that she had stored away. Of course, I knew I could do it but I was worried, too.
Let me tell you, that first cut with the saw was the scariest one of my life! I measured and measured again to be sure it was just right.
I used the headboard just the way it was and cut the footboard in half (a little more actually). I then attached the footboard pieces to the headboard to make arm supports. A "box" was constructed from 2x4's and attached to square it all up. Then 1x4's were cut to make the seat with a support in the center. I used a special paint called Java Brown that makes it look like stain.
She was thrilled when I had her pick it up. It will now be an heirloom bench she, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren can enjoy forever.
